Guy Builds Huge, Incredible Racetracks For Squirrels In His Backyard
by Kassandra Herrera
When Steve Barley and his son built their first squirrel obstacle course back in 2010, they had no idea it would become such a delightful hobby — for both them and all of their backyard squirrels. The first course was very simple, but each one became bigger than the last — and years later, they’ve gone on to build some fantastic courses.
“Nearly 10 years on, my back garden challenges for our furry friends have become bigger and more elaborate or, as my wife puts it — 'Really, this is getting out of hand,’” Barley wrote on his YouTube page.
In late July, Barley truly outdid himself when he built a racetrack for the “Furmula 1 Squirrel Grand Prix” — by far his grandest creation yet.
Barley and his family have become quite fond of all the squirrels running around their backyard, and they couldn’t wait to see them tackle the racetrack. The squirrel with the most impressive run was nicknamed Lewis Scrambleton. He even started in the correct spot — right on the starting line that Barley created.
Lewis had a quick start on the track, but then proceeded cautiously through the “tire change.”
“Beautifully handled there, he’s really getting to grips with the track,” Barley said in a video about the course.
… He sped straight through a huge steering wheel obstacle …
… and expertly maneuvered a tricky turn.
The spunky squirrel then took a few moments to rest at the “nut stop” …
… before heading through the final tunnel …
… and triumphantly finishing the course in record time!
His prize? A delicious bird feeder full of seeds.
After 10 years, the squirrels in Barley’s backyard have gotten very good at navigating even the trickiest of obstacle courses, and this racetrack was no exception. The courses are a fun way for the squirrels to leap across the yard, and they’re no doubt excited to see what Barley comes up with next!
